This practical resource provides a survey on the technologies, protocols, and architectures that are widely used in practice to implement networked multimedia services. The book starts presenting the background and basic concepts behind multimedia networking, and provides an introductory high-level overview of the different services and protocols that are covered in the book. Then, it continues with a detailed analysis of how multimedia services work, reviewing the diverse network protocols that are of common use to implement them. To guide the explanation of concepts, the book focuses on a representative set of networked multimedia services, with proven success and high penetration in the telecommunication market, namely Internet Telephony, Video-on-Demand (VoD), and live IPTV. Contents are presented to the reader following a stepwise approach, describing each network protocol in the context of a networked multimedia service, and making appropriate references to the protocol as needed in the description of other multimedia services.

This book also contains questions and exercises to provide the reader with an insight on the practical application of the explained concepts. Additionally, a laboratory practice is included, based on open source tools and software, to analyze the operation of an Internet Telephony service from a practical pespective, as well as to deploy some of its fundamental components.

Target audience

This book aims at providing telecommunications specialists, and professionals working with multimedia services, an in-depth and up-to-date coverage of the different technologies involved in the delivery of this type of services. The book can also serve as a meaningful reference to professionals without previous knowledge on multimedia services over IP networks. This includes engineers working in traditional circuit switched networks, although familiar with the basics of TCP/IP; and network engineers with expertise in data services. Finally, and considering the authors’ experience in the field of education, the book has been structured and written in a way to also serve as a useful learning resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on multimedia networking.

The reader is assumed to have knowledge on the basic concepts of computer networking and the TCP/IP protocol suite, particularly the IP protocol, the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). However, and to facilitate the access to the book contents to a broad audience, the first part of the book presents the background and basic concepts behind multimedia networking, providing information and specific references to related protocols as needed.

About the authors

Ivan Vidal works as Visiting Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, in the Department of Telematics Engineering. He received the Telecommunication Engineering degree in 2001 from the University of Vigo (Spain), and the Ph.D. in Telematics Engineering in 2008 from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain). He has worked as professor in Universidad Carlos III de Madrid since 2002. Dr. Vidal has been involved in several international, national and regional research projects, and has participated in different contracts with public administrations and other organizations, carrying out diverse activities related with consulting, technical assistance and research. These activities include his work as network architect in the regional research network of the Community of Madrid (REDIMadrid). Dr. Vidal has published over 50 research papers in conferences and international journals and magazines, and has served in the technical program committee of different conferences and workshops. He is currently member of the editorial board of the Internet Technology Letters (Wiley).

Ignacio Soto received a telecommunication engineering degree in 1993, and a Ph.D. in telecommunications in 2000, both from the University of Vigo, Spain. He was a research and teaching assistant in telematics engineering at the University of Valladolid from 1993 to 1999. He was associate professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid from 2010 to 2012. In 1999 he joined University Carlos III of Madrid, where he currently works as an associate professor in telematics engineering. His research activities focus on mobility support in packet networks, heterogeneous wireless access networks, multimedia networking, and vehicular networks.

Albert Banchs received his Telecommunications Engineering degree from UPC BarcelonaTech, Spain, in 1997, and the PhD degree from the same university in 2002. He was a visitor researcher at ICSI, Berkeley, CA, in 1997, worked for Telefonica I+D, Spain, in 1998, and for the Network Laboratories of NEC Europe Ltd., Germany, from 1998 to 2003. Since 2003, he is with University Carlos III of Madrid, and he also has a double affiliation as Deputy director of the IMDEA Networks research institute since 2009. He was Academic Guest at ETHZ in 2012, and Visiting Professor at EPFL in 2013, 2015 and 2018. Prof. Banchs authors more than 100 conference and journal papers, is editor for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, and has been editor for the Green Networking and Communication Series of IEEE JSAC, Computer Communications and IEEE Communications Letters. He has served in the Technical Program Committee of a number of conferences, including IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE ICC, IEEE WoWMoM, IEEE PIMRC, IEEE WCNC, IEEE VTC, ITC and ACM WiNTECH, among others. He has been general chair of IEEE Online GreenComm 2013 and ACM WiNTECH 2013, and TPC co-chair of IEEEE WoWMoM 2012 and European Wireless 2010. Prof. Albert Banchs has been the Principal Investigator of a number EU projects, having been the coordinator of two of them and the Technical Manager of a third one. He has also been the inventor of several patents, and the author of a number of standardization proposals. He was an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer in 2016-2017 and is a Senior Member of the IEEE.


Jaime Garcia-Reinoso received the Telecommunications Engineering degree in 2000 from the University of Vigo, Spain and the Ph.D. in Telecommunications in 2003 from the University Carlos III of Madrid, Spain. He is currently a visiting professor at Univ. Carlos III of Madrid having joined in 2002 and he has published over 50 papers in the field of broadband computer networks in top magazines and congresses. He has been involved in several international and national projects related with broadband access, peer-to-peer overlays, Next Generation Networks, signalling protocols, information-centric networking and 5G networks like the EU H2020 5G-EVE, EU H2020 5G-Transformer, EU IST MUSE, Trilogy 2 and the Spanish BioGridNet, MEDIANET and MASSES projects.


Ivan Lozano received a computer engineering degree in 2000 from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Master´s degree of Sciences computer Networks in 2003 from University Carlos III and Master in Business Administration (MBA) from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in 2010. In 2001 he joined Telefonica Spain, like engineer in Technology Departament development IP Network Management Systems. In 2006 like project manager, he was the person in charge to define and manage the evolution and strategy the Architecture of Control Solutions (AAA, PCRF, session manager, DNS). Currently he works like Head of Technology IP Networks and he is the person in charge to decide the strategy for IP network evolution in regards to the transformation and development of the infrastructure that support and capabilities to support new services.

Gonzalo Camarillo is the head of Data/IT standardization at Ericsson and the chairman of the board of the Internet Society (ISOC). He has been actively involved in the IETF community for many years, where he has authored several RFCs (e.g., the main SIP specification), and served in both the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) and the IAB (Internet Architecture Board). He has also chaired a number of working groups in several areas (currently, he chairs the SIPBRANDY, HIP and TRAM Working Groups) and served in multiple directorates.
